What ASTM A967 and AMS 2700 mean in the context of passivation

ASTM A967 and AMS 2700 are technical references for the chemical passivation of stainless steel. For users in industrial plant engineering, they are particularly relevant when processes must be specified, documented and tested.

Standards do not replace individual process design. Material, geometry, pre-cleaning, process control, rinsing quality and testing must be matched to the specific component and its later application.

ASTM A967
ASTM A967 describes chemical passivation procedures for stainless-steel parts. The standard addresses passivation itself, but also includes cleaning, descaling and test methods to confirm effectiveness.

Practical relevance
ASTM A967 serves as a technical reference framework for process description, test planning and documentation.

AMS 2700
AMS 2700 describes the requirements for procedures used to remove free iron or other less noble contamination from corrosion-resistant steels.

Practical relevance
AMS 2700 becomes especially relevant where processes must be clearly specified and released.

What should be clarified before passivation

1. Pre-cleaning

Oil, grease, machining residues and other contamination should be removed before passivation. In many cases, highly alkaline pre-cleaning is decisive for the result.

2. Material and geometry

Product selection depends on whether surfaces, pipelines, tanks or small components are treated and which stainless-steel grade is present.

3. Rinse water and drying

Rinse quality, drying, and process control are important factors for achieving a clean result. The drying phase should last at least one hour to ensure optimal passive layer formation.

4. Testing and release

If internal specifications or customer requirements apply, passivation should be technically coordinated in advance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

CitriSurf is suitable for these applications.

For large surfaces and weld seams, CitriSurf ® 2210 is the appropriate main solution. If rust spots are present, CitriSurf ® 2310 is relevant.

Depending on the stainless-steel type, CitriSurf ® 2250 or CitriSurf 3050 may be suitable.

In practice, suitable pre-cleaning is often decisive for a good result.

CitriSurf ® is aligned with procedures according to ASTM A967 and AMS 2700. For practical application, material, process control and testing requirements must also be considered.
